RECEIPT DESIRED?
Today I stopped at a gas station I don't normally frequent because road construction. I filled the tank, replaced the nozzle, replaced the gas cap, and the fuel pump screen said:
Desired? That's a strong word. It's creepy. It is amazing they were able to cram bad, passive writing into that tiny space. Just give me the receipt. It isn't like:
No. It isn't like that at all.
No. I think PRINT RECEIPT? would be the appropriate message.

"Oh Gas Receipt, ever since I first saw you, I had to have you. You are so beautiful Gas Receipt. Run away with me, I must make love to you."
No. It isn't like that at all.
"Da-yum Gas Receipt, you're tight. I would very much like to hit that."
No. I think PRINT RECEIPT? would be the appropriate message.

# THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THAT THING
"There's a problem with that thing."
"No there isn't."
"Yes there is. That thing is happening all the time. We could fix the problem. It would take a lot of work, but..."
"No. There isn't a problem. I do not see a problem."
"But what about X, Y, and Z? We need to fix this stuff. Something needs to change."
"Those are isolated incidents. They are not connected in any way. All circumstances and events exist in a vacuum."
"They are a trend. They are a symptom of a bigger issue."
"No they aren't. Can you give me a specific example?"
"A couple, but there are so many..."
"If you can't give me twenty specific examples, right now, off the top of your head, there isn't a problem. If you give me twenty examples, I'll ask for twenty-one examples."
"This Thing is a problem. It's complicated and involves..."
"I don't see it. It isn't affecting me, so it isn't a problem..."
"It's a problem."
"Do you have a specific solution, that you can describe completely, right now? Is it foolproof and perfect, as all plans are foolproof and perfect?"
"Well no..."
"See? Then there is no problem, and even if there was a problem, which there isn't, it can't be fixed because there is no perfect solution that is easy, and involves no sacrifice. No problem."
"But..."
"Nope. End of discussion. I have to go do things now. Also, booze now. I do not have time for this. Things are going well for me, so there is no problem. Booze now, and sports. Booze now?"
"Yes, booze I suppose."
~~~ LATER ~~~
"Can you believe that thing that happened on the news!? It is awful and terrible! This will briefly make me somewhat sad, for a few days, or hours!!"
"Yes. I can believe it. I don't see why you are surprised. It is part of the thing we were talking about the other day, these things are connected."
"No. There is no problem. That is not a real problem. We don't need to fix it, it isn't a problem."
"You don't see how that led to this?"
"No. It is another isolated incident. I have to go do things now that are important to me. Work stuff now. Booze later, and also, sports."
"No there isn't."
Cola Hubris
Those new Coca~Cola commercials are sad and incredibly stupid:
"Hey consumer! You are surrounded by an Internet filled with relentless, hate-filled trolls who will stop at nothing to make your life a living hell. Your only hope is that some reckless, clumsy network administrator who doesn't follow the rules (NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE SERVER ROOM, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD) spills his Coke on a MAGICAL SERVER that will allow the Internet, simply by the virtue of some freakish, impossible anomaly, to artificially cheer you up, by accident, by creating some kind of virtual AI "friend" that will boost your spirits, (which, by the way, you are unable to do yourself, as you are a complete victim of all the idiots on the Internet {stop staring into your phone!})."
Anyway, that's how I feel about Coca~Cola's new ad campaign. For the record, I like Coca~Cola. It is delicious and refreshing. They should go back to the old, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" hubris, and shitcan this "WE ARE YOUR A.I. FEEL-GOOD OVERLORDS" hubris.
{The following includes extensive use of ellipsis.}
Sometimes, on television, or on the radio, actors will pause . . . as if they are thinking up their lines off the top of the head, impromptu, when talking about the careful consideration they took when choosing their bank, their insurance, or their laxatives. On television, they will look to the side . . . they will pause . . . as if trying to find the right word to say. These actors are trying to appear thoughtful, wise . . . reflective.
These lines are carefully crafted by writers who know what buttons to push, and what keywords to include . . . or exclude. But the actors will pause . . . as if thinking . . . usually ending with something like, "and that's important to me," or "shouldn't my bank/insurance/laxative do this or that?"
#79 THEY TELL US WHAT TO THINK
There are photogenic, sonorous people with cameras and microphones, and they tell us what to think.
They claim to tell us what is happening, but they tell us what to think.
They might be on the Left, and they might be on the Right, but they tell us what to think.
They tell us what to buy and wear and drink and they tell us what to think.
Right and the Left work together to tell us what to think.
If we think for ourselves we are told we are wrong and they tell us what to think.
They "inform" us by forming us and they tell us what to think.
The news is not the news because they tell us what to think.
By tone of voice and innuendo and background music they hide that they are telling us what to think while they tell us what to think.
In school they tell us what to think. In church they tell us what to think.
At work they tell us what to think.
On the campaign trail and in office they tell us what to think.
Rebellious groups are still groups and they tell us what to think.
In press releases and written statements they tell us what to think.
In history books and police reports they tell us what to think.
Our families and friends tell us what to think.
Commercials tell us we shrink and slink and stink and they tell us what to eat and drink and think.
Everywhere you turn people tell us what to think.
# THE NEW SPEEDWAY IS OPEN! FREEDOM!
The Speedway near our house has been closed for a couple of months. They tore it down to build a new one. It is just a few blocks from our house. Oh how we took it for granted.
So it opened today, just three hours ago, and despite the 98 degree heat, Deb and I walked there to check it out.
As we walked toward the future, to that grand spaceship that was the new Speedway, I dreamed of all the magical things that would be there: lotto, beer, meat-like things, snacks, donuts, pizza-adjacent foodlike items, candy, chips, an ATM, gasoline... everything my American Freedoms allow me to enjoy.
Old Glory flew high and proud above the car lot next to the Speedway. The New Speedway was open! It was open! Oh the Freedom to exchange American currency for products and scratch-off tickets. I was like Charlie, and I had a Golden Ticket to the Wonka Factory, only the tickets were green, and the Wonka Factory was a convenience store.
We strode in as though striding through the very gates of heaven. If Elvis Presley himself was behind the counter, I would not have been shocked, for this was heaven on earth. Lite Beer and Lotto! Breath Mints and those brown gloves with red lining!
Wide eyed with innocent wonder, we walked the candy isles. There were HUGE bags of sunflower seeds!
Everything was new and shiny. The employees, yet to die from the inside out, gave the impression of actually being alive inside. Their spirits were yet to be broken!! There was a WALK IN BEER COOLER which I walked into. It was very cool in there. I didn't want to leave.
They had Coca-Cola in GLASS BOTTLES.
Oh to be Free and American in this great land. To buy lotto tickets and a 40oz. Lite Beer in the same place! Hunting magazines and car magazines! 5 Hour Energy and Snickers bars!
My first Muzak Moment in the new Speedway? Kansas's 1977 smash hit, "Dust in The Wind."
I stood there a moment, serenaded by a 35 year old recording of soft guitar, and pondered what this all meant as four flavors of Slushies slushed around in their American Freedom Slushy machines.
In conclusion, Freedom.
The Credit Crunch
If we were really a Chri$tian nation, and we're obviously not, we wouldn't have a credit crunch. Oh America, you nation of Chri$tians, are you really following your bible? I think not:
Exodus 22:25
Exodus 22:25
New American Standard Bible
"If you lend money to My people, to the poor among you, you are not to act as a creditor to him; you shall not charge him interest.
King James BibleLeviticus 25:36
If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.
Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.
Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God; that your brother may live among you.
spend $250.00 on a chance to win a doll! cripes!
So I'm listening to the local radio, usually I listen to NPR cause I like to think I'm a brainiac snob, but today I'm listening to (radio voice) Classic Rock 96.9 WLAV and they run this commercial from Woodland mall. It has two lady shoppers at the mall chatting, and they say something about "every time you spend $250.00 and be entered in an American Girl sweepstakes." and I'm thinking, who in the HELL is spending $250.00 at the mall more than once? Who are these people? So I check the website:
Spend $250 in one day in any store inside Woodland Mall between November 19 and December 16, 2007, bring your receipts to the Customer Service Desk and your receipts will be totaled, rounding to the nearest whole dollar and stamped as proof of expenditure. If your receipts total $250 or more from any store inside Woodland, you will be entered into a drawing to win an American Girl Doll with a retail value of $87. Only one prize awarded per person for any drawing.I dunno, it just seems weird. Think I'll mention The Story of Stuff with Annie Leonard again.
